About this book

he Way of Kings is set in the storm-ravaged world of Roshar, where powerful Highstorms shape both the landscape and its people. The story weaves together multiple perspectives, primarily focusing on Kaladin, Shallan Davar, and Dalinar Kholin, each navigating personal struggles while unknowingly influencing the fate of their world. Kaladin, once a skilled surgeon’s son, becomes a soldier and later a slave after betrayal destroys his life. Forced into brutal bridge crews—used as expendable human shields in war—he struggles with despair and repeated failures to protect those around him. Despite this, Kaladin begins to rediscover a sense of purpose as he forms bonds with fellow slaves and develops mysterious powers tied to ancient forces known as Surgebinding. His journey is one of leadership, resilience, and reclaiming honor in a world that has repeatedly broken him. Shallan Davar, a young noblewoman with a hidden traumatic past, travels to become the ward of the scholar Jasnah Kholin. Secretly, she plans to steal a powerful magical artifact to save her family from financial ruin. However, her path leads her into deep philosophical and magical studies, including the nature of reality, perception, and ancient knowledge. As she progresses, Shallan uncovers dangerous truths about herself and the world, including her own suppressed abilities. Dalinar Kholin, a powerful highprince and brother to the assassinated king, is haunted by visions during Highstorms that seem to come from a divine source. Once known as a ruthless warrior, Dalinar now seeks a more honorable path, guided by a mysterious ancient text called The Way of Kings. His attempts to unite the warring highprinces and reform a corrupt system put him at odds with political rivals, especially as others question his sanity. The backdrop of the story is a prolonged war on the Shattered Plains, where Alethi armies battle the Parshendi in a cycle of vengeance. However, this conflict is only a surface-level struggle compared to the looming return of ancient threats—the Voidbringers—and the reawakening of long-lost powers and orders known as the Knights Radiant. The novel explores deep themes such as leadership, honor, mental health, trauma, identity, and the meaning of strength. It gradually reveals a larger narrative about forgotten histories, cyclical destruction, and the responsibility of individuals to rise above their past. By the end, the characters begin to step into roles that will shape the future of Roshar, setting the stage for an epic saga of renewal and conflict.
